She owns a room standing up. People are always surprised by that.

She runs things, though never loudly. It is the kind of authority where you look up from the meeting and realise the direction of the conversation shifted twenty minutes ago, and she is the reason why. She has never let the fact that the room was not built for her become her problem to solve.

Her authority is not performed. It does not come from how she speaks, what she wears, or the title on her email signature. It comes from being almost always right, from moving quickly on decisions other people hesitate over, and from making space for the people around her to be good at their jobs without turning it into something about her. That combination turns out to be genuinely rare.

She finds it faintly amusing when people are surprised by her. She has had a lifetime of watching that recalibration cross someone's face when she walks into a room and turns out to be the person they were waiting for. She does not resent it. She simply notes it and carries on, which is its own kind of power.

She dresses for herself. The red dress is hers because she likes it, not because it makes a statement, though she is well aware that it does. She chose it anyway.
