On Brass and the Roman Empire

Some materials become associated with particular objects; for example, marble suggests architecture, and leather suggests books and furniture.


Brass is more difficult to place.


For much of history, it appeared wherever careful workmanship was required. It was shaped into vessels and mirrors, worked into jewellery, struck into coins and fitted to objects intended for daily use.


Its history is less defined by a single purpose than by its ability to move between them.

Although forms of brass existed before the Roman Empire, it was the Romans who transformed it into a material of remarkable scale. They refined methods of production, established workshops across their territories and carried the alloy through an expanding network of roads, ports and trade routes. Wherever the empire reached, brass often followed.


The process itself was based on observation rather than scientific understanding. Roman metalworkers heated copper with zinc-rich minerals, producing an alloy centuries before zinc was recognised as a metal in its own right. They understood the result long before they understood the chemistry.


Brass offered qualities that suited the needs of an empire. It resisted corrosion, could be worked into fine detail and possessed a warm golden colour that distinguished it from bronze. These characteristics led to its use in objects intended for both practical and ceremonial life, from domestic wares to military fittings and coinage.

The Romans knew the alloy as orichalcum. Under Emperor Augustus, it became the material for some of the empire's highest-value everyday coins. Their golden appearance was not incidental. Materials have long communicated meaning before a word is spoken or an inscription is read.


Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Roman brass is not the alloy itself, but what it reveals about movement. Copper travelled from one landscape. Zinc ore from another. Furnaces, workshops and merchants brought them together before finished objects continued their journey across Europe and the Mediterranean. Every piece carried the work of many hands long before it reached its owner.


Materials often tell stories that extend well beyond the workshop. Brass is one such material. Its history is shaped by trade, observation and craftsmanship, reminding us that value has rarely belonged to rarity alone.
